New Owner Interview - Welcome Arfy!

(EDITOR NOTE: The commish is boring and doesn't include any fun images to lead the article. Boo Canada!)

Commissioner: Tell us about Arfy. What is he like? What does he do in his spare time when not obsessing over your rosters?

A: My name is Lauren. Yes, I'm a dude! I'm 51 years old. Act like I'm 30.
I live in South Florida. Grew up in Montana. Also lived in Wisconsin and Washington most of my life. Obsessing is the word. I get something in my head and I can't let it go. I'm thinking about my teams 24/7. I'm a serious gamer as I find myself playing Flying Simulator, or Call of Duty, or Pubg several hours of the week.

C: Obviously, you're a very experienced owner. What intrigued you about joining Cobbfather?

A: I love the active blog. In my younger days we had the Pine Tar world blog quite active. But stuff happened, and I didn't have time to keep up with it. And when my momentum went down, so did everyone else's.

C: What is your proudest moment in HBD?

A: Actually, my proudest isn't just in hbd itself. I'm most proud of the fact that I've won titles in the big 3 WIS games. I have 5 Gridiron Dynasty titles, 26 Hoops Dynasty Titles, and now 2 Hardball Dynasty titles. I know for a fact there aren't many people in that boat. (Commissioner's Note - No one likes a bragger, Arfy. ;) )

C: What is your favorite part about building a franchise? Do you try to make a lot of trades? Would you rather build through the draft or IFA? Or just buy a team like Steinbrenner used to do?

A: Taking over a franchise is the most exciting part to me. I don't even care what condition it is in. I'm confident enough that I feel I can make just about any franchise at least competitive. I pride myself in finding players that nobody wants and then using them to my advantage. I recently had a player in another world that passed waivers 12 times and still had an era under 5.

I'm not big into trades. I use it as a last resort mostly. Although sometimes I like to take advantage of teams having fire sales late in the season and get great players for dirt cheap. I don't understand that thinking honestly. . I don't really have one way that I build my teams. I usually just make the best deal I can. Although I feel I'm pretty good at getting good talent through the draft.

C: Of your current roster, who do you like most? Promise they will never read these articles! What about prospects? Who are you looking forward to the ML team in the next couple of seasons?

A: Honestly I feel that with as many times as the team finished dead last, it should have much better talent and prospects. I would have to say Gordon Eyre is probably my favorite. I'm hoping he can start putting up better numbers than he did last season though.

C: What are your goals for the upcoming season? Are you looking to push for the playoffs? Or do you expect to rebuild for a couple of seasons?

A: My goal for this season is to shoot for near the .500 mark. I just don't want our fans to have to endure being a carpet anymore. I think we can be competitive within 3 or 4 seasons. For now, I'll be happy just hovering around the .500 mark

C: What has been your favorite aspect(s) of Cobbfather so far?

A: Once again the active blog. Something no other world compares to. I look forward to the glory of the New York Empire that I expect the writers to be talking about soon in seasons to come.

C: What advice would you give a new owner in HBD? Besides making sure to ignore most conversations with the Commissioner of Cobbfather?

A: My biggest advice would be to find value in players that others don't. Create a system that others don't use, and stick to it no matter what happens.

S61 - Trade Tree

 Jack Torrance - contributing reporter

The blog writers are always taking suggestions and this came to us from the wheeler and dealer - ekontz41 to do an article on a trade tree, so since he made the suggestion and because he does so much trading; I picked his team to go through. If you have a player that would be fun to follow, let me know. It takes a good bit to follow it all the way through, but here we go...I'm giving pick value and IFA signing money as a reference for what was coming back.

S26 $2.3M international signing of Jimmie Cedeno. Signed as a 21 yr old out of San Pedro de Marcoris, Dominican Republic about a week into the season. Was traded the next season (S27) for RF Al Albaladejo (S20 #26 pick); who earned a prompt ML promotion.

(Branch 1) Albaladejo was packaged with Ron Corino (S27 #33 pick) and Lorenzo Bonilla (S27 #44 pick) for $800k + CF Sam Becker (S22 #8 pick) + Jack Choice (S23 #48 pick)

(Branch 2) Jack Choice who was released in S34 with no return beyond years played. (Branch 2) Sam Becker who was traded in S34 along with Walker Houston (S32 FA signing) for RP Dustan Singleton (S32 #14 pick) and SP Domingo Torres (S30 $10M IFA)

(Branch 3) Singleton left for FA in S42 as a Type B FA; which led to the draft of Will Hines who retired after 4 pro years, never make the majors.
(Branch 3) Torres was traded in S39 along with Jon Everett (S37 #1 pick) and Warren Sager (S36 #68 pick) for SP Koyie Ward (S35 #7 pick)

(Branch 4) Ward was traded traded in S47 for Grayson Lowry (S45 #28 pick) and SP Rando Powell (S45 #3 pick)

(Branch 5A) Powell was traded S52 for Hector Mota (S51 $3.3M IFA) and Vince Saarloos (S50 #5 pick)

(Branch 6A-1) Saarloos was traded with C Miguel Romero (S52 $16.1M IFA) in S60 for C Nicky Constanza (S57 #4 pick) and RP Jose Bazardo (S54 $5M IFA)

(Branch 6A-2) Mota was moved in S53 along with C Del Manaea (S47 #284 pick) for 3B Wil Johnston (S48 #6 pick)

Johnston was flipped in S55 along with SP Zephyr Gross (S45 #4 pick) and RP Ossie Crow (DITR S46 #490 pick) for SP Garabez Castillo (S53 $10.1M IFA)

(Branch 5B) Lowry was traded S48 with Gregor Diaz for $5M, 3B Ernest Paulson (S36 #16 pick), and SP Rougned Pulido (S38 #770 pick - this guy performed like a 1st round pick)

(Branch 6B-1) Paulson was then traded to Columbus for RP Julian Clay (S40 #34 pick) who was packaged with Pulido and SS Yovani Bonilla (S40 #12 pick) for SP Damaso Ethier (S46 $23.5M IFA) in the same season.

(Branch 7) Ethier was flipped as an expiring contract in S60 for $2M, 2B Javier Quevedo (S48 $18.9 IFA) and C Arthur Howell (S59 #40 pick).

(Branch 8) Howell was flipped this season, S61; with RF Omar Villano (S49 $24M IFA) and C Graham Ratterree (DITR S59 #579 pick) for RP Carl Jackson (S52 #11 pick).

So in a nutshell, the S26 $2.3M IFA spend has turned into current S61 players: CF Javier Quevedo (34 yr old), C Nicky Constanza (24 yr old), SP Garabez Castillo (26 yr old), and RP Carl Jackson (29 yr old).

We all know those players will likely be moved, so the tree continues to grow.

Updated map below as Pittsburgh moves 300 miles west to Cincinnati. Rumor has it they stopped by Columbus to prank the Corgis by letting a bunch of cats loose in their stadium. Bonus feature of the map, we are currently showing locations of the fan bases (EDITOR NOTE: Apologies, I see some errors but I already closed it all out and didn't want to reopen photoshop. The file errored out on me and I already had to redo some of it. Next update will be better.)

S61 Way To Early Rankings

 Richard Castle - contributing reporter

Let's get a (way to early) rankings for favorites to win Season 61.

American League
  1. Houston - Two World Series appearances in two years, could have been three if Game 7 of the S58 ALCS went a little differently. Still a solid team that should continue producing.
  2. Atlanta - Never count this team out, could we see 15 straight division titles from them? More? Even though they've won no less than 103 games over the S50s. And honestly, I'd prefer the #2 seed in the AL anyway given how strong Huntington is in Wildcard #1.
  3. Huntington - Weiss and WYW will be back in the MVP race, but last year's team felt far from S58's 122 W team.
  4. Helena - The team is trending in the right direction but the top of the AL is loaded. They will likely back to playing Wildcard 2 in the AL Play In, and then Atlanta in the ALDS....again.
  5. Mexico City - The next three are tough and could end up in any order; with the winner claiming Wildcard 2 and the privilege to playing Helena in the playoffs.
  6. Tucson - A solid young team but they'll lose Laxton who hit .300+ and knocked in 100+ runs; so that production will need to be matched if they are not able to resign him in the offseason. And for that reason, we'll hold them below the cerveza drinking Frogs in Mexico City.
  7. Boston - The team definitely missed the bat of Juancito Martin but think they will eventually be okay if they have a strong post season. The division is Atlantas for the taking though. I'd expect another 80-90 win season.
  8. Philadelphia - The AL North finishes in the AL rankings as teams 9, 12, 14, & 15. We think Philly makes at least one more run with Al Cervantes, Josh Hunt, and Vin Pirela if not two before trading them for a rebuild.
  9. Jacksonville - They play in what the blog-o-sphere believes to be the toughest division in the league and have a huge hill to climb to make the playoffs. This will be the 6th season for rwings so I think the future down in Florida will be sunny before you know it!
  10. Augusta - Can they go for a 3rd straight 72-90 season? The rebuild continues...
  11. Colorado Springs - I'd expect another couple of seasons of adding protected picks 10-16 before "springing" into high gear and back competing for the AL title.
  12. Minnesota - They won the AL North last year with a sub .500 record - and the team hasn't had a winning record since S57; nor have they won more than 87 games since S49. In a league that is black and white on rebuilding and competing, Minnesota is one of the few grey teams operating in the middle zone.
  13. Anaheim - Durability seemed to be a problem for the ML team last year, but given a few trades that were made; I think it signifies a kick-off of a rebuild.
  14. Dover - Could this be the year the team wins more than 70 games for the first time since S53? We shall see, but unfortunately with the trades over the last few seasons, they are not stocked with prospects and will need to continue working through the draft.
  15. Fargo - Year 2 and rebuilding, Need to at least win 1 more game than last year but the team has its direction.
  16. New York - With a new owner now running the team, I'd expect a season to reassess what the previous was "building" but likely have a few seasons or adjusting the game plan.
National League

  1. Tacoma - with that pitching staff throwing half their games in an extreme pitcher's park; and a decently young team. I'd expect a run on a few key position players to boost their lineup and help support back to back NL MVP, Ernest Page.
  2. Santa Fe - With money to spend and an already potent lineup, it's hard to imagine them improving any more; but they will. They'll try to slug their way pass Tacoma.
  3. Salem - The new favorite in the NL West. Next push is further in the playoffs. Sadly the baseball team is about the only exciting thing to do in Salem or even in the state of Oregon.
  4. Montreal - The only part of Canada worth anything and they don't even speak English as their official language. Would be good to see an active year in Free Agency but budgets are tight.
  5. Washington DC - I think is the year they take the division.
  6. Columbus - The team is another year older and while I still expect them to produce, I think DC finally overtakes the division from them.
  7. Hartford - They had a solid run but lost the 3rd most games since jverrier took over? As a tradesman, I'd look for him to make some moves this offseason to see if they can get at least one more run out of the team. Afterall, they won the world series in S59!
  8. Oklahoma City - Another year older but plays in a weak division, which has now shifted to Salem's division to lose. But as long as there's a klown in charge of the team, you can expect good things. They've only had 4 losing seasons in the last 21 years.
  9. New Orleans - Trying to rebuild but Rookie of the Year Baker will have other plans. Sad to see his prime years spent with a team rebuilding. Perhaps they could move him for another pack of prospects that will meet their contending timeline.
  10. Buffalo - Hard to rank them here as it's rare to see Buffalo with a losing season. Is this going to be a long term rebuild or will they shift quickly and get back to Bison standard.
  11. Charleston - The franchise needs some wins and in a bad way. Opie has his vision, but let's see how it unfolds.
  12. Scottsdale - Year 2 of mini taking over the team. Year 1 was about clearing the books. Let's see what Year 2 has in store; but something tells me it won't be Wins.
  13. Austin - Feels like they've been bottom of the NL South for so long now, and they haven't won more than 70 games since S52. Their typical player will hit 15-25 HRs and steal 10-20 bases on a .250 AVG - but a team needs more than to win these days. Austin, I know you're weird; but let's turn this around.
  14. Chicago - Rebuilding, proving points, and taking names later. Could easily see them fall below Pittsburgh next season....as long as it's above 55 wins.
  15. Pittsburgh - The team has been so bad for so long, surely things are going to start looking up from here.
  16. Vancouver - If they could be lower on our list, they would be. This scene in Moneyball comes to mind when thinking about where to rank Vancouver. I don't care that they had 2 rookies in the award voting this season, the Silver Slugging CF Patsy Shipley, or #5 S60 Fireman of the Year Wandy Nunez on their team. They rank where they rank, and no SORee about it. What you call bacon is NOT REAL bacon!

There you have it, our completely wrong list of rankings that we hope inspire a generation of GMs.

S60 Record Books

Jack Torrance - Contributing Reporter

Winner Winner....Chicken Dinner

Houston, we have a winner! What a Game 7 that was, top of the 9th with Houston leading 7-3 the Aroma are down to their last 3 outs. Single. Fly Out. Walk. Walk to load the bases. Fly Out. Bases loaded, 2 outs and back to back NL MVP stepping up to the plate; who might I add has struggled this postseason. Line drive grand slam to tie it up. Bottom of the 9th; K, great play at 2B for 2nd out with AL MVP up with 2 out and nobody on - strike out; game goes to extras. Top of 10 the Tacoma Aroma had 2 outs and a runner on 3rd to have B.Cooper ground out to the SS; to the bottom of the inning we go with Houston's cleanup hitter due up first. Single, Single - runner advances to third. Zero out and runners on the corner. B.Maxwell hits a groundball single passed the second baseman, scoring Lester for the walk-off. And the celebration and banging of the trash cans began!! Congrats to rawdk for the Series win.

Trivia

New York Empire continued their storied run, and narrowly avoided a record 5th straight #1 pick. Previous owner went 30-95 (.240) while Arfy, his replacement, went 16-21 (.432). 8 of those early 30 wins came against Jacksonville, with just 2 losses; which means NY had gone 22-93 (.191) against every other franchise.

With little effort required, Scottsdale turned Tokyo's league worst .232 winning % minor league clubs into a .439 winning %, nearly doubling their percentage from last year; but at what cost? The wildcard they made last year, but then again the team was in sell mode and not expecting to make it anyway. Taking their place as worse minor league record is Atlanta at 116-536 (.178) partially thanks to Harry Raley (Atl - DH) & Douglas Mende (Atl - CF) coming in at #1 and #2 respectively in innings pitched down in Rookie ball; all in relief appearances of course since you can't set a position player to start a game. They combined for 71 appearances, 276 innings pitched, 280 earned runs, 2.44 WHIP, 9.13 ERA. And at the level above them, Low A; Atlanta had an amazing 41 games losing streak as part of a bigger 1-59 run. Their High A had a similar 35 game losing streak. AA, a 22 game game losing streak. And AAA had a 34 game losing streak to start the season. Moving on because it's the minors and nobody cares about the minors minus those drafted in the first round or signed to an IFA deal above $10M. I propose we develop a new minor league, called the Star League - where only potential ML stars can be assigned - let them duel it out as they develop and before they become ML stars of the future. The league will have 8 teams, each division gets their own team, forcing division rivals to work together to develop their prospects.

On that note, EK set a Cobbfather record with his 11th straight 100+ win season; tying former NY Empire's alex previous record of 11 and his (EK's) previous best of 8 straight during his last big run. Which is crazy to think that division has been owned by two teams during three different runs for a combined 30 of our 60 seasons. Congrats to him and looks like he'll be able to keep it going for the foreseeable future. Good luck to new owner arfy and the rest of the division in upstaging him.

Moving on to team records. We are changing things up a bit and working on a post from earlier this season about including stats from the last 20 seasons. For this season that goes back to S40. We'll move forward with a 20 season rolling clock to see which team owns records based on the last two decades of play. Hard to beat some of those early seasons (1-13) before there were tweaks to the game engine. Underlined and bold teams are records from this season.
