Meet the Owner - CollegeBoy33

Catherine Trammell - Contributing Reporter

Q: Tell us about Collegeboy33. What is he like? What does he do in his spare time when not obsessing over your rosters?

A: CB is a man that wears many hats, but none that fit perfectly. When not working, I try home improvement, parenting, fantasy sports, etc. I gave up real sports years ago with injuries piling up.

Q: What did you like most about taking over your Boston franchise? You have some big shoes to fill taking over an owner who had that franchise for 50 seasons.

A: I liked OKC first! ;) BOS was two fold. 1- I can't stand terribly managed, bloated contracts and BOS didn't have those. Which leads to 2- it appeared alog and I didn't have similar philosophies, so having type A/B departing FAs allows me to take it in a different direction more quickly on my terms.

Q: We heard that the commissioner promised you one team and then took it away from you. Is this true? How much do you want to punch the commissioner in the face for that?

A: Haha, yeah what a jerkstore.

Q: We know that you are newer to Hardball Dynasty, so what is your favorite part about building a franchise? Do you try to make a lot of trades? Would you rather build through the draft or IFA? Or just buy a team like Steinbrenner used to do? From the looks of your first offseason, I'm guessing the draft with 7 of the first 50 picks in the draft.

A: You're guessing right. I love the draft. It's all in my control to get exactly what I'm looking for. I probably spend way too much time prepping as I can get to about a top-125 list of players. I get burned on intl too many times, whether from poor scouting or being outbid and then sitting on cash with no good players left. I'm always scouring rosters for good trade fits, but I'm not too active out of the gate since I don't have a good grasp on guys historically yet. I'm telling you, prepping so much for drafts really gets me intimate knowledge on a lot of guys that I'll remember down the road.

Q: Of your current roster, who do you like most? Are there prospects that you are looking forward to promoting? Prospects that you want to see develop? What are you looking forward to with your ML team in the next couple of seasons?

A: Oof tough question. There's not a lot to like on the ML team anymore since they all left! I like Yarnall and Alvarez in the MiL but just because they're the most recent too guys picked. Like above, I'm looking forward to getting new guys that fit my style.

Q: What are your goals for the upcoming season?

A: Goals - In my 17 short seasons, I struggled my first 8. Since then, I've won my division every single season, and that includes taking over teams in two other leagues that were abysmal. Not sure I can do it this season, but I'm going to try. I'm also a big proponent of MiL team success. I almost like that more than ML.

Q: Know it's only in first season here at Cobbfather, but what has been your favorite aspect(s) so far?

A: I really like the banter on the chat board. The game itself is the cerebral part, but the WC is entertaining.

Q: Do you have any advice you would like to give to others for HBD? What brought you success in your other franchises?

A: Advice? Hmmm. Plan ahead with your finances. I'm typically about 3 seasons out on knowing exactly what my contracts, payroll and budgets will be. I know what position I'll need to focus on and what I can afford. That's why I struggled the first few years.

Q: There seems to be a bias against Canada, especially from that team on the Bayou, so I ask you--Canada? Yay or Nay?

A: I'm indifferent, eh. (EDITOR NOTE: The correct answer is nay!)

Q: We heard through the grapevine that you knew goldenbear88. Is this true? Anything you want to say about him, good or bad? Doubt he'd read this anyway. ;)

A: I 'met' Goldenbaer virtually right here in HBD. He worked IRL with my old high school bud. That guy is who got me into this HBD drug addiction. I feel like I know GB through the association of my hometown bud.

Q: Any final thoughts going into the Season?

A: I'm glad to be a part of Cobbfather. I actually really like that I don't know anybody here. There are some guys that are in so many leagues (and they usually aren't the greatest competitors) that it's refreshing to think everyone here appreciates the game and not just the volume of teams. I am curious though..why 'Cobbfather', and should I be concerned with some unpleasant history with the 'Cobb' league?

S51 Time for the Hall - Part 2

Eli Cash - contributing reporter

Alright folks, part two is here; let's take a look at the pitchers up for Hall voting. As a reminder, HoF voting ends 12/22 am, so be sure to get those votes in and make them count. The pitching is a little more clear cut than the hitting was, always a little tough to gauge it seems. Another refresher for those who missed the Part 1 - particularly the primer for a detailed explanation of the three scoring system we use. As a quick reminder, a sure thing for a hitter is 60/130/500, for a starter its 60/130/420 and for a reliever (who doesn't use the Test Score) is 130/250. You'll see them highlighted in blue below.

Players ranked by Monitor score

Jimmie Hartman - received Eli Cash's vote
First year on ballot. Jimmie was a workhorse, he started 32 games or more for 14 straight seasons
Stat Chasers:  250+ Wins, barely misses 2500k by 61. One of the lowest career WHIPs among current Hall of Famers, won over 65% of his games, career ERA below 3.00
Trophy Chasers: 7x All Star, 4x World Series rings, 2x Cy Young
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, John Smotlz

Armando Merced - received Eli Cash's vote
Second chance at a final year of voting. Cash has supported Merced since the beginning and I still believe he belongs in the Hall; but I clearly have Sean Gosling, Raul Galvez, Edinson Hernandez, and Bob Graves above him. You'll see below that I have Tomo Hayashi above him too. I wanted to throw my vote to Merced instead of Bob Graves just because it's his last time on the ballot and would be sad to not get him in! He's secured no less than 11 votes each time, toping out at 13 last year but that's still 4 short of an induction. The scores don't lie, Merced ranks above 9 other Cobbfather HoF pitchers and just below Chris Pendleton.
Stat Chasers: 3000+ K, 270 W, 5 seasons of 18+ W, 6 of 200+ K and 6 sub 3.00 ERA seasons.
Trophy Chasers: 7x All Star, 3x World Series rings
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Don Sutton, Catfish Hunter, Early Wynn

Midre Tavarez
Final ballot season yet again. His comps aren't the best, but he has routinely been around the 6-8 mark surprisingly. We covered how similar he is to Merced in Season 47's Hall recap if you'd like to jump over for a quick read.
Stat Chasers: 270+ W, 5 seasons with 18+ W, 5 sub 3.00 ERA seasons.
Trophy Chasers: 6x All Star, 2 World Series rings, 1x No Hitter
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Jose Mesa, Tommy John, Ron Guidry

Players ranked by Monitor score

Al Balentien
5th and final year on the ballot, he topped out his first year with 4 votes but hasn't had more than 2 any other season. There is just no love for relievers, and as you'll see with Hayashi; especially no love for owners that close stud closers as middle relievers for 80+ games a season. The "counting" stats just don't add up for them. I wouldn't blame you for continuing to push for Balentien for the Hall, as 13 current Cobbfather HoFers rank below Balentien's 179 Monitor score. Nearly topped 500 saves - ranking #3 all time on the saves list.
Stat Chasers: 8 seasons of 40+ SV, 6 of sub 3.00 ERA
Trophy Chasers: 8x All Star, 5x Fireman of the Year, 1x World Series ring
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Tom Glavine, Gaylord Perry, Jim Palmer

Tomo Hayashi
4th season on the ballot and the love still hasn't been good for him. As referenced in the above, had he been on any other owner's team and used as a closer, he'd likely be talked about as the All-time leader, even ahead of Sale. But he did practically pitch every other game with great success and there has to be some value to that. In fact in Season 36 he pitched in over half of that season's game (86). On the low end he could have averaged 40 saves those 9 seasons; which would have given him 705 saves. And that's if he only managed 40, most top closers secure more a few more than that each year. But a strong bullpen is a strong bullpen. Similar to Balentien, outranks 13 current Cobbfather Hall of Famers.
Stat Chasers: Pitched to the tune of 13 sub 3.00 ERA seasons (5 were sub 2.00). Even though he didn't close during his prime, he still managed 8 seasons of 30+ SVs.
Trophy Chasers: 7x All Star, 1x Fireman of the Year, 2x World Series ring
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Gaylord Perry, John Smoltz, Trevor Hoffman

Eduardo Jose
Third season on the ballot and seems to be able to secure a vote or vote. Sadly he just doesn't have the numbers and those votes are costing some of the above and referenced hitters in Part 1 the Hall. I'll ask of you, if you want to vote for Jose let's put it off until next year and get some of these other guys who deserve in the Hall!
Stat Chasers: 6 seasons of sub 3.00 ERA, 10 seasons of 30+ SV (3 were 40+)
Trophy Chasers: 7x All Star, 2x Fireman of the Year
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, Andy Pettitte

Artie Stone
On his 4th ballot, but like Jose; if you want to vote for him let's put it off until next year and get some of these other guys who deserve in the Hall!
Stat Chasers: 5 seasons of sub 3.00 ERA, 5 seasons of 30+ SV (3 were 40+)
Trophy Chasers: 6x All Stair
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Jose Mesa, David Cone, Joe Nathan

There you go folks, S50 possible Hall of Famers. Let's see if anyone gets in this year!

S51 Time for the Hall - Part 1

Eli Cash - contributing reporter

For a refresher for those new voters, be sure to skim past articles; particularly the primer for a detailed explanation of the three scoring system we use. As a quick reminder, a sure thing for a hitter should fall above 60/130/500, for a starter its 60/130/420 and for a reliever (who doesn't use the Test Score) is 130/250. You'll see them highlighted in blue below. Don't be a '90s chicks (or a Canadian, same diff) and make sure you aren't just voting for just the long ball.

Last year we saw Sean Gosling (3B - 58/203/461), Bob Graves (SP - 73/233/391), & Raul Galvez (CF - 62/203/454) all earn entrance to the Hall. This year's hitting ballot is lead by first timer Ubaldo Alvarez (LF - 67/198/504) who only played for one franchise and retired shortly after it was moved to El Paso. Can't blame him, who wants to play in west Texas? The players whose names are in bold and green are the ones this writer will be voting for and feels are all deserving of their spot in the Cobbfather Hall of Fame.

Players ranked by Monitor score

Ubaldo Alvarez - received Eli Cash's vote
In his 1st year - In his prime years he had 6 straight seasons of 100+ R & 100+ RBI with 4 of them hitting above .300. Without a doubt he belongs in the Hall. Checks off every box.
Stat Chasers: Surpasses 2500 hits, 500 hr, 1500 runs, and 1500 rbis for his career.
Trophy Chasers: 7x All Star, 4x World Series rings, 9x Silver Slugger awards (LF & RF)
Season averages: 169 H, 32 HR, 22 SB, 102 R, 95 RBI
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Sammy Sosa, Roberto Alomar, Frank Thomas

Edinson Hernandez - received Eli Cash's vote
Seems to be some arguments in the writing world as to whether Edinson should be on this year's ballot, his 6th year - Fantastic lead-off hitter that often times would find himself in scoring position either by a double or a single and a stolen base. Only thing holding him back is the fact that he wasn't a 3 or 4 hitter who hit home runs.
Stat Chasers: 1 SB shy of 600, 2nd all time in 2Bs, 13 seasons with 100+ R, 6 with 30+ HR (once with 40+), 14 seasons with 35+ 2Bs (3 were 45+) - no other HoF comes even close, 2500+ H, 400+ HR, 500+ 2B
Trophy Chasers: RotY, 7x All Star, 2x World Series rings (RF)
Season averages: 172 H, 27 HR, 40 SB, 117 R, 86 RBI
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Paul Molitor, Kirby Puckett, Ernie Banks

Gregory Treinen
In his 1st year - Very deserve and likely would have gotten Eli's vote had it not been Edinson Hernandez and Wiki Unamuno's last year on the ballot. He can count on my vote next year without a doubt!
Stat Chasers: 600+ HR but falls short of every other milestone, 5 seasons hitting more than 50 HRs.
Trophy Chasers: 4x All Star, 1x Gold Glove 1B, 1x MVP, 2x Silver Slugger.
Season averages: 176 H, 37 HR, 2 SB, 94 R, 109 RBI
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Reggie Jackson, David Ortiz, Joe Morgan

Yohan Mairena
In his 1st year - His monitor score seems to rank high but seems to be driven by 4 fantastic seasons in Buffalo early in his career. I wouldn't blame you for voting for him, but there are plenty of other deserving players that are on their last chance for the hall.
Stat Chasers: Doesn't seem to hit any of the milestones.
Trophy Chasers: 6x All Star, 2x MVP, 5x Silver Slugger, 1x World Series ring
Season averages: 141 H, 33 HR, 6 SB, 84 R, 95 RBI
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Jim Rice, Joe Cronin, Mike Trout (as of last season)

Wiki Unamuno - received Eli Cash's vote
In his 5th year - If he doesn't make the Hall, it will be because of his limited number of seasons played. But the ones he did play, he was great as you can tell by the 542 Cash points a season. His average seasons ranks up there above Edinson Hernandez, but the counting stats just aren't quite there. Imagine having a 30 HR / 40 SB / 40 2B threat at the top of your lineup in his prime. My vote will go to him this year as it will be his last chance getting into the Hall.
Stat Chasers: Feel just shy of 2500 H by 59, 500+ 2B, .300+ career AVG, 11 seasons with 100+ R, 7 with 100+ RBI, 9 with 35+ 2B (4 were 40+), 4 seasons 30+ HR
Trophy Chasers: 6x All Star, 1x World Series ring (RF)
Season averages: 188 H, 26 HR, 36 SB, 118 R, 99 RBI
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Gary Carter, Ozzie Smith, Edgar Martinez

Benny Romano
In his 2nd year - Had 2 votes last year and plenty of people can make the arguments for him, but this writer just doesn't back them.
Stat Chasers: Surpassed 500 HR (by 14) and 1500 RBI (by 25), but had he not played 11 seasons in Santa Fe, there's no way he'd have those numbers. Just missed a career .300 hitter by 5 hits.
Trophy Chasers: 3x All Star, RotY, 1x Silver Slugger
Season averages: 176 H, 37 HR, 2 SB, 94 R, 109 RBI
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Albert Belle, Gary Carter, Don Mattingly

Haywood Swan
In his 5th and final year - He's close but not there. Least amount of seasons played for any current Hall of Famer, though also has one of the higher OPSs.
Low Test and Monitor Score
Stat Chasers: 9 seasons with 100+ R, 8 with 100+ RBI, 8 with 30+ HR (4 were 40+),
Trophy Chasers: 2x MVP, 7x All Star
Season averages: 150 H, 32 HR, 22 SB, 104 R, 97 RBI
MLB (Monitor) Comparisons: Jeff Kent, Barry Larkin, Andre Dawson

For Sale By Owner

Catherine Trammell - Contributing Reporter

Cobbfather just completed it's 50th season and looking forward to the next half century.

  • Scranton Hammers (NL - North)
    • After tying for 3rd place in the division in a down year, at least by mikewcu's high standards, the Scranton Hammers have been put up for sale. It was the first time Scranton finished below 2nd place in the division since mike came on board. Playing in the NL North, their new owner will enter facing a tough Chicago Gungslingers team who was favored to win the World Series but lost in the NLCS. A Montreal team entering their rebuild years, and the continual rebuild of the Hartford Rising Stars. Entering next year's draft with the lucky #13 draft pick.

S50 Record Books

 Jack Torrance - Contributing Reporter

Winner Winner....Chicken Dinner

The writers may have ended the season on a strike, but that didn't stop Merritr from claiming his franchise's first title since S37. And what a final run he had, coming back from being down 0-3 in the ALCS and then sweeping Tucson during the World Series.

Congrats again and let's get ready for the start of the next 50 seasons!

Trivia

With alogman retiring from Cobbfather, rawdk27 is last remaining original / never left. To kick off the first 50 seasons, he want the first eight of the ten division titles with 3 of his 5 World Series titles coming those years. As Houston comes out of a rebuild, I'd look for them to kick off the next 50 years strong. Watch out Monterrey, we might have lift off soon!

Minor League

AAA
In a rematch of last year's AAA World Series, Monterrey over New Orleans 4-2
MVP: Matt Tanner (AL - Col, 24) & Bobby Coppinger (NL - Pit, 34)
Cy Young: Bert Suppan (AL - Wic, 26) & Joel Gibbs (NL - Van, 30)

AA
Helena over Buffalo 4-3
MVP: Yadier Saenz (AL - Hel, 22) & Louie Romero (NL - NO, 23)
Cy Young: Tomas Benitez (AL - Hel, 21) & Aneury Amarista (NL - NO, 23)

A+
El Paso over New Orleans 4-1
MVP: Chuck Rupe (AL - Phi, 22) & Grant Gardner (NL - SJ, 22)
Cy Young: Cedrick Miles(AL - Wic, 26) & Tony Miro (NL - LA, 24)

A-
New Orleans over Wichita 4-3
MVP: Brent Lombard (AL - Atl, 25) & Ozzie McIntosh (NL - Chi, 29)
Cy Young: Kenley Lawton (AL - Wic, 25) & Alex Trevino (NL - Wash DC, 22)

Rookie
Another rematch of last year's Rookie World Series that sees Wichita returning 20 of its 30 roster slots; and New Orleans winning again 4-2
MVP: Alex Tavarez (AL - Phi, 19) & Jemile Frandsen (NL - Hart, 19)
Cy Young: Clay Beamon (AL - EP, 22) & Magglio Rivas (NL - SaF, 35)

Great minor league seasons by New Orleans playing in four of the five minor league world series. Monterrey wins the ML and AAA World Series, seems like good things are in store for them over the coming seasons.
