S54 On the Clock - redrafting S44

 Gabrielle  O. Alvarez-Tillman - Contributing Reporter.

Thought we'd start a new series on the blog, looking back at the draft a decade prior.  It just so happens this first look back was the year the blog hired a handful of new writers; myself included. Under the leadership of sermonarthur, the Mexico City franchise; then in Tampa Bay; had just won the S43 World Series against klown's OKC Barons. Which also happen to be the only two teams who lost first round draft picks. There were only 4 other Type A free agents. At the bottom of the standings and thus top of the draft board was a3morey and the Hartford Whalers; finishing the season 58-104. The franchise would soon be purchased by theangryduck who happily moved the franchise to Pittsburgh renaming them after some language most people have not heard of. We'll take a look at each pick, where they are now, and who might have been a better pick (hindsight is everything!) for the first 15-20 picks. We'll limit the look back to first and supplementary round picks and forego re-accessing diamonds in the rough because you never know if those players would have fully developed under the leadership of another franchise.

There was much written years ago about this draft and how many thought it was the start of a prospect drought in Cobbfather. Let's take a look at what could have been the best possible outcome at each pick in a perfect world where everyone has a crystal ball.

All-in, this group has accounted for 17 all-star appearances, 4 silver slugger award, 8 gold gloves, 1 fireman of the year, and 6 world series ring

Asterisk denotes picks selected by another owner. Any stats listed are as of this initial draft of this article.

  1. Pittsburgh - Rip Bromberg (3B)
    • Hard to argue this pick, he's been the cornerstone of the Pittsburgh franchise since being promoted to the majors in S47.  His big injury concerns haven't been a factor thus far.
    • Stats: 1100 games played, .303 avg, 140 hr, 119 sb, 635 r, 594 rbi, 431 bb, 431 k. 3 all-star selections and a NL Silver Slugger 3B award.
    • Redraft Pick: Shea Crowe (prev #7) - This is a close one but I leaned towards Crowe's power and production (HR/SB) over Rip's ability to get on base. As a new owner with mere days experience, one can't blame Pittsburgh for snagging Rip when they did. Especially since Crowe wasn't even on their radar.
  2. Jacksonville (Monterrey) - Santiago Cora (SP)
    • Didn't take long before we saw Cora up in the majors, made 15 starts that season for just under 100 innings. Even made 6 starts during S50 on his way to his first and currently only World Series Ring.
    • Stats: 245 game starts, 1748 ip, 123-84, 629 bb, 1174 k, 1.23 whip, 3.61 era. Two all-star appearances and a world series ring.
    • Redraft Pick: Santiago Cora (prev #2) - Can't argue with a pitcher who helps lead the top of your rotation. Solid pick for Monterrey, even in a redraft.
  3. *Baltimore (Augusta) - Sammy Figureoa (SS)
    • Likely drafted for his high defensive projects, but they didn't quite come around to the average ML shortstop. He's flipped between 3B and SS, but his bat just doesn't carry the impact needed for a third baseman. A bit unfortunate because in 628 games at SS he's had 0 plus plays & 33 minus plays and 467 games at 3B he's had 37 plus plays & 1 minus play. But he did just sign a lucrative 2/$22.4M this past offseason with Austin.
    • Stats: 1137 games, .244 avg, 131 hr, 43 sb, 425 r, 432 rbi, 275 bb, 734 k
    • Redraft Pick: Rip Bromberg (prev #1) - Surprised he's dropped to #3 in the redraft but thus far Rip has proven he can get on base. Helpful, but he's not driving in a bunch of runs and he's not advancing with additional stolen bases. Definitely adds a TON of value but I'd lean Crowe and Cora over him with what they've done to date. But imagine the Augusta franchise with Bromberg over Figureoa.
  4. *Charlotte (Huntington) - Groucho Woodall (SP)
    • Woodall didn't last long and found himself released by S50, signing on with a rebuilding team shortly after. Not sure what happened in the development of this one, but save to say Charlotte could have done a lot better.
    • Stats: 213 games, 148 starts, 984 ip, 44-69, 276 bb, 667 k, 1.47 whip, 5.57 era
    • Redraft Pick: Shawn Long (prev #27)
  5. Florida (New Orleans) - Tim Timmons (SP)
    • Insider info says Florida was leaning Loewer but went Timmons last minute. He just hasn't been given the chance in Florida/New Orleans and was moved this season to Columbus who is making major changes with their roster. In exchange they sent Edgardo Boscan to the NOOFs. Perhaps in a new uniform, he'll be able to show us what he's made of.
    • Stats: 25 games, 14 starts, 80 ip, 7-8, 19 bb, 65 k, 1.29 whip, 5.76 era
    • Redraft Pick: Brandon Stevens (prev #635)
  6. Dover - Charles Loewer (SP)
    • He wasn't expected to be a top of the rotation arm, but he's definitely added value. Charles found himself traded to the Huntington Tropics in S48 that saw Earl Baker and Phil Williams going back to Dover.
    • Stats: 172 games started, 776 ip, 34-35, 240 bb, 615 k, 1.26 whip, 3.77 era
    • Redraft Pick: Dominic Malone (prev #34)
  7. *Anaheim - Shea Crowe (2B)
    • The steal of the draft, not many would have thought Crowe would slip all the way down to #7. Many thought it was because the Junior College he was coming out of were known for their softball program. Just as Crowe was starting to get expensive, the new owner in Anaheim sent him packing for prospects to Chicago. In return they received: Edgar Amaro, Ken Hollins (released the following season), and Yuniesky Tavarez. Not a great productive return but I'm sure it looked better on paper when the deal was made.
    • Stats: 1409 games, .280 avg, 400 hr, 151 sb, 1010 r, 1057 rbi, 502 bb, 908 k. 2 all-star appearances and an NL Silver Slugger 2B award.
    • Redraft Pick: Charles Loewer (prev #6)
  8. Columbus - Drew Ducati (LF)
    • A solid play for a franchise whose record was going to quickly start climbing from below .500 to nearly .600 for the next few seasons. He is one of few Corgis still on the roster from it's glory days.
    • Stats: 976 games, .298 avg, 160 hr, 215 sb, 626 r, 497 rbi, 422 bb, 623 k.
    • Redraft Pick: Drew Ducati (prev #8)
  9. Washington DC - Boone Hines (2B)
    • This was the start of a long string of early first round picks for the Country's capital. DC released him just prior to S53 when he was entering his Arb3 year. He currently finds himself playing Anaheim becoming a FA after next season in hopes to sign another 3/$16.2M or better deal.
    • Stats: 835 games, .258 avg, 29 hr, 72 sb, 321 r, 210 rbi, 215 bb, 410 k
    • Redraft Pick: Louie Cubillan (prev #24)
  10. Chicago - Seth Buford (RP)
    • Currently serving as the closer in Chicago, he's put in quality innings the last two seasons and hopes to keep it up. Got the call in S48 where he picked up a 3-6 record and 4/7 saves over 70 innings and a 3.31 ERA. He isn't your 8th inning guy, but if your starter needs to get pulled early he carries some pretty decent value.
    • Stats: 377 games, 28-25, 36/55 saves, 417 ip, 138 bb, 377 k, 1.25 whip, 3.30 era
    • Redraft Pick: Willis Everidge (prev #12)
  11. *Tucson (Seoul) - Quinton Barry (LF)
    • While Barry may have spent 7 of his first 10 professional years in the Majors, he is currently the highest draft pick currently waiting for a contract. Released after his first Arb season, he signed a few low level contracts
    • Stats: 869 games, .277 avg, 86 hr, 103 sb, 461 r, 358 rbi, 369 bb, 610 k
    • Redraft Pick: Stretch Story (prev #169)
  12. Philadelphia - Willis Everidge (SP)
    • Everidge has one thing many guys on this list are still looking for, a world series ring. Another solid back of the rotation guy; great value this late in this season's draft.
    • Stats: 191/194 game starts, 77-68, 1132 ip, 357 bb, 887 k, 1.28 whip, 4.15 era, 1 world series ring
    • Redraft Pick: Vic Guerrero (prev #46)
  13. Louisville (San Juan) - Simon Pimentel (RP)
    • Stats: Pimentel didn't spend much time with the payroll heavy Louisville, having been traded the following season to Houston and playing on his first contract extension that's not set to expire until after S56. He helped bring the Cardinals Benji Lopez (SP). Lopez is still with the franchise, now in San Juan and on the final year of his contract; however he is spending the year in AAA. Solid trade for both teams.
    • Stats: 382 games, 33-23, 23/33 saves, 562 ip, 180 bb, 391 k, 1.28 whip, 3.60 era
    • Redraft Pick: Ted Torres (prev #69)
  14. Austin - Hal Lawton (SP)
    • Not quite the back of the rotation pitcher we've seen drafted ahead of him, but he's still making a living out of playing ball. Made his ML debut S48. Some people in Austin blame the recent streak of 4th place division finishes on Lawton. But that's Austin for you, keep Austin weird!
    • Stats: 205/206 game starts, 63-83, 1194 ip, 415 bb, 830 k, 1.40 whip, 4.79 era
    • Redraft Pick: Marvin Johnson (prev #116)
  15. Santa Fe - Neifi Romero (3B)
    • Did not sign - Santa Fe being another big budget team likely didn't account for signing a first round pick. So we won't give them a redraft pick either. Sorry Surf Rider fans.
  16. Vancouver - Allen Rossy (2B)
    • Rossy is another short tenure in the majors, being released after Arb2. He was able to secure a AAA contract with Philly last year but only managed 44 at-bats.
    • Stats: 769 games, .252 avg, 34 hr, 79 sb, 350 r, 219 rbi, 300 bb, 515 k
    • Redraft Pick: Sammy Figureoa (prev #3)
  17. *Trenton (Hartford) - Dummy Everett (RP)
    • This is an interesting case where former owner Ploppie drafted him under one NL franchise but then traded for him in S50 when he owned another AL franchise with the current owner (Hartford). He's still pitching for the AL Franchise but now under a different owner. He one one bright season (S52) but under new ownership he's failed to live up to those expectations. Perhaps it was a 'dummy' move to trade for him, as he gave up Felipe Teheran; who was recently sent packing again this time to Columbus for stud reliever Marcos Owen; securing Hartford's bullpen.
    • Stats: 45/190 game starts, 18-25, 11/16 saves, 418 ip, 137 bb, 319 k, 1.38 whip, 4.67 era
    • Redraft Pick: Hal Pierce  (prev #45)
  18. Milwaukee - Tim Marshall (RP)
    • Signed about $1M above slot, but still pitching for Milwaukee but becomes a FA next season; guess we'll see if any rebuilding teams want to take a chance on him or not but he's a SuB at best.
    • Stats: 242 games, 19-26, 3/13 saves, 320 ip, 112 bb, 216 k, 1.46 whip, 4.74 era
    • Redraft Pick: Seth Buford (prev #10)
  19. Boston - Gabriel Servet (SP)
    • It took new ownership in Boston to get him some ML playing time; even started 65 games between S52 & 53 as the club continued to rebuild. At some point, likely his Arb1 year his contract will become too pricey for the output he's providing.
    • Stats: 65/74 game starts, 15-33, 387 ip, 170 bb, 282 k, 1.57 whip, 6.11 era
    • Redraft Pick: Quinton Barry (prev #11)
  20. Houston - Ober Soto
    • Did not sign - Houston finished S43 on the decline after quite a few division titles in S40 & 41. Soto did not sign but the club soon went into rebuild mode. One has to wonder if Ober had signed where would he be now...Sober hopefully. We'll skip over Houston's pick in a redraft since they didn't sign this one.
  21. *Salem (Portland) - Wilkin Javier (LF)
    • Wilkin is thankful for owner staeben for quite a few reasons. First and foremost he's not sold the team and second, finally gave him playing time. This franchise is on their 5th owner since S44; no wonder it's still rebuilding. After a season of full time ABs, he's back to the bench.
    • Stats: 371 games, .240 avg, 22 hr, 28 sb, 134 r, 113 rbi, 91 bb, 261 k
  22. *Syracuse (Montreal) - Ernest Johnson (SP)
    • Another player whose been on the go, but this time via trades. Selected by Syracuse (S44), moved to Augusta (S45) with the team, traded to Philly (S45), waived and selected by New Orleans (S48), traded to Vancouver (S49), removed from the 40-man and released (S51), but made a resurgence by signing a High A offer to play with Dover. Perhaps we'll see him coaching soon. He can help future prospects learn how to pack their bags properly.
    • Stats: 23/26 game starts, 5-9, 134 ip, 44 bb, 83 k, 1.27 whip, 4.30 era
  23. Atlanta - Danny Zapata (2B)
    • Would you believe it if I told you Atlanta traded away Zapata before he made the majors? But this one took him 3 seasons, sending him to Austin that net him Akinori Yoshi who then turned into Esmil Polanco and Ruben Suarez who turned into Alan Street. They were package deals not just straight one prospect but that's how you trade up. Zapata has since gone unsigned this season after his two seasons in the majors at Austin.
    • Stats: 111 games, .233 avg, 4 hr, 6 sb, 30 r, 24 rbi, 17 bb, 45 k
  24. *Scranton (Tacoma) - Louie Cubillan (RF)
    • Scranton continually in the playoff hunt ended up trading Cubillan in S46 for rookie closer Ronnie Andrews. Under new ownership Andrews was flipped in S51 with with Bennie Swann to the NOOFs, clearing future cap space and a package of prospects - Pedro Encarnacion, Vladimir Domingo, and Daniel Barrett. Cubillan is signed through next season with the Colorado Springs and currently in a playoff race. Averaging 23 HR & 14 SB a season and has won a gold glove in half the seasons he's played, that's great value for a pick so close to the back end of the draft.
    • Stats: 951 games, .248 avg, 140 hr, 89 sb, 442 r, 439 rbi, 272 bb, 641 k. Three Gold Gloves.
  25. Buffalo - Rich Hiller (LF)
    • Promoted towards the end of S48 he had a few full seasons but lately has been regulated to the bench; appearing in 24 games with only 21 abs this season.
    • Stats: 752 games, .260 avg, 59 hr, 12 sb, 266 r, 264 rbi, 203 bb, 336 k. 1 world series ring
  26. Colorado Springs - Wirfin Presley (RP)
    • Wirfin is our first player in the draft to not make a major league appearance due to many control issues in the minors, and retired by the age 23. Any redraft pick here would be better than this one.
    • Stats: None
  27. Cincinnati (Minnesota) - Shawn Long(SS)
    • Another solid late first round pick who averaged 46 HR at SS for Cincy/Minny before being packaged to Chicago in S51 for prospects Douglas McCovey (SP - yet to make his debut) and Benito Posada (3B). Considering the power and gold gloves at SS, this might be the steal of the draft.
    • Stats: 984 games, .243 avg, 267 hr 4 sb, 454 r, 674 rbi, 135 bb, 962 k. Five all star appearances, 3 gold gloves
  28. *Honolulu (Tokyo) - Roger Sterns (C)
    • Solid selection by then owner tonicawf, who ended up trading away Sterns for parts at a final run before selling the club prior to S47, acquiring Jumbo Sakamoto from Buffalo who then spent three seasons with the franchise before leaving for free agency. Solid platoon catcher who seems to have a full time gig this season with Philly.
    • Stats: 763 games, .253 avg, 44 hr, 0 sb, 212 r, 232 rbi, 206 bb, 374 k. One world series ring.
  29. New York - Morgan Maholm (P)
    • Another big budget team who doesn't sign many draft picks during their drive for a world series ring.
  30. *Baltimore (Augusta) - Cy Hawkins (SP) - Tampa Bay signed Oswaldo Blanco
    • Dumped Hawkins for Blade Bellhorn in a strange move and push for a playoff run. Bellhorn pitched 149 innings of 2.90 ball out of the pen followed by 125 innings and 3.95 ball the following year. Not a ton of value from this draft pick.
    • Stats: 134 game starts, 50-44, 904 ip, 291 bb, 626 k, 1.36 whip, 4.23 era, one silver slugger P
  31. Helena - Butch Wayne (1B)
    • Butch ended up being a Rule 5 draft pick by Vancouver Canucks in S48, even offered him back but the Hot Dogs declined. Left for FA this past off-season.
    • Stats: 208 games, .251 avg, 27 hr, 22 sb, 95 r, 86 rbi, 62 bb, 173 k
  32. Buffalo - Dane Maurer (RP) - Oklahoma City signed Lawrence Carpenter
    • Signed through Arb1 with Buffalo but claimed by Mexico City this season on waivers. He's your back of the bullpen type, SuB.
    • Stats: 138 games, 11-7, 7/8 saves, 263 ip, 104 bb, 184 k, 1.34 whip, 4.62 era
  33. *Baltimore (Augusta) - (Oswaldo Blanco - Type A) - Salvador Creek (RP)
    • Currently pitching well for Portland out of the pen, who claimed him off waivers 2 seasons back. Still working on getting his career going.
    • Stats: 180 games, 8-11, 4/11 saves, 176 ip, 54 bb, 133 k, 1.35 whip, 4.48 era
  34. Washington DC - (Preston Graves - Type A) - Domonic Malone (2B)
    • In an odd move, DC traded him for an expiring contact of Doc Cortes, even though they were set to finish last in the division. Struggled last year when New Orleans acquired him to come off the bench, but seems to be hitting well and a career high in SLG for Dover this season. Signed through S58.
    • Stats: 918 games, .282 avg, 105 hr, 63 sb, 424 r, 365 rbi, 290 bb, 541 k. 1 all star appearance.
  35. *Trenton (Hartford) - (Giovanny Stanley - Type A) - Rafael Mercado (RP)
    • Hasn't done much with the limited opportunities he was given, but was traded to Colorado Springs in S46 for now retired Starlin Burns; but flipped for Lenny Fonda, who was later flipped in the package for Edgmer Fernandez by the current owner this season.
    • Stats: 76 games, 9-3, 7/7 saves, 205 ip, 68 bb, 134 k, 1.22 whip, 3.42 era.
  36. Atlanta - (Ernest Lewis - Type A) - Corky Jones (3B)
    • Trade fodder for Atlanta but found a home in Austin after a deal of prospects for Mark Yang (2B) who was flipped a season later for Davy Oliver (RF)
    • Stats: 858 games, .243 avg, 89 hr, 178 sb, 384 r, 364 rbi, 218 bb, 638 k.
  37. Buffalo - (Lawrence Carpenter - Type A) - Banjo Correia (P)
    • After many seasons in the minors he finally received the call up for 2 innings in S52 but made 30 appearances the following year. Currently on the 60-day DL.
    • Stats: 41 games, 7-7, 2/2 saves, 146 ip, 47 bb, 101 k, 1.22 whip, 3.50 era
  38. Helena - (Luigi Molina - Type A) - Robert White (P)
    • Signed for $4M thru next season, traded to Houston in a package deal that included Don Krause (RP) and Tyler Strange (DH) coming back to Helena
    • Stats: 211 games, 79 starts, 40-34, 13/14 saves, 700 ip, 511 bb, 488 k, 1.53 whip, 4.27 era.
  39. Pittsburgh - (Alex Amaral - Type B) - Cory Kennedy (C)
    • Yet to make the majors, still catching for Pittsburgh in AAA.
    • Stats: None
  40. *Baltimore (Augusta) - (Vic Chavez - Type B) - Francisco Morales (2B)
    • Hasn't played since S52 and never made the majors.
    • Stats: None
  41. Washington DC - (Fergie Bradley - Type B) - Sam Cantwell (RP)
    • Currently serving Mexico City in the SuA role. Flipped to MC during S48 for Christopher Romero (RP) who was packaged and flipped for three players led by Yasmany Mercado (SP). Quality trading up by the different owners.
    • Stats: 252 games, 18-16, 20/33 saves, 254 ip, 89 bb, 193 k, 1.43 whip, 4.18 era
  42. Chicago - (Todd Thomas - Type B) - Sherman Hawkins (RP)
    • Playing the SuB role for Chicago who has been chasing a title the last few seasons so I give this an A+ for value this late in the draft, being promoted S48 and adding to the big league club.
    • Stats: 267 games, 19-11, 14/20 saves, 255 ip, 77 bb, 191 k, 1.20 whip, 3.56 era.
  43. Louisville (San Juan) - (Leslie Evert - Type B) - Bart Higley (SS)
    • Packaged with #13 pick another pick for Benji Lopez, but he's still playing in the majors and for his 6th club.
    • Stats: 670 games, .197 avg, 31 hr, 167 sb, 263 r, 180 rbi, 158 bb, 542 k.
  44. Santa Fe - (Clinton Carew - Type B) - Boomer Cornely (2B)
    • Santa Fe's stadium was made for hitting bombs and you won't find many with this guy. By the time he was ready for the majors, he was traded to Minnesota for RP Travis Rollins
    • Stats: 493 games, .270 avg, 8 hr, 210 sb, 251 r, 172 rbi, 102 bb, 260 k
  45. Vancouver - (Bobby Coppinger - Type B) - Hal Pierce (RP)
    • For such a late pick he performed well out of the pen and has transitioned to a starter for Seoul this season. Released prior to his Arb2 season from Vancouver.
    • Stats: 236 games, 21-21, 4/10 saves, 442 ip, 55 bb, 319 k, 1.33 whip, 3.94 era
  46. Milwaukee - (Sadie Griffin - Type B) - Vic Guerrero (3B)
    • Spent a few seasons with Milwaukee at the major league level but released prior to Arb3 season. Productive power years but not enough to keep him around I guess.
    • Stats: 842 games, .241 avg, 178 hr, 358 r, 456 rbi, 238 bb, 777 k
  47. Houston - (Mason Jeter - Type B) - Brett Braden (2B)
    • Hasn't played since S51 but got a few productive years of 20 HR and .250ish average for Houston.
    • Stats: 547 games, .270 avg, 94 hr, 11 sb, 244 r, 267 rbi, 143 bb, 489 k
  48. Atlanta - (Dante O'Connor - Type B) - Eugene Davis
    • Did not sign, any kind of deadline trade for O'Conner would have been an improvement.
  49. *Scranton (Tacoma) - (Humberto Zurbaran - Type B) - Will Anderson (CF)
    • Has found some productive years in CF and has seen nearly every aspect of the business side of the game from being traded from Scranton to (now) Huntington in S46 to acquire Graham Wallace. But was left unprotected just 2 seasons later ended up as a Rule 5 pick by Philly. Released after Arb2 and signed as a FA by Anahiem.
    • Stats: 947 games, .247 avg, 98 hr, 96 sb, 384 r, 330 rbi, 254 bb, 838 k.
  50. *Honolulu (Tokyo) - (Luis Carrasco - Type B) - Julius Small (RP)
    • The Honolulu franchise was a top NL team when drafting Small but he was unable to crack the major league lineup and became a free agent S50 without finding a home since.
    • Stats: None
  51. New York - (Wesley Moran - Type B) - Chance Jackson (2B)
    • Did not sign
  52. *Tampa Bay (Mexico City) - (Marcus Henson - Type B) - Cliff Jordan
    • Did not sign
  53. Washington DC - (Melvin Jensen - Type B) - Otis Karl (SP)
    • Selected as a Rule 5 just 4 seasons later and retired a season later.
    • Stats: None
  54. Santa Fe - (Cristian Beckett - Type B) - Kolten Barajas (SP)
    • Some injury issues slowed down his growth and never make the ML roster. Signed a FA deal with Anaheim but was unable to do much there either.
    • Stats: None
  55. Houston - (Willis Kulik - Type B) - L.J. Anna (RF)
    • LJ has an interesting story, selected just before the second round, then became a Rule 5 in S48 and claimed off waivers by Atlanta where he had a productive rookie season. The slipped a bit the following seasons but enough that he had some trade value, being sent to Austin in the Mark Yang deal mentioned earlier.
    • Stats: 234 games, .272 avg, 17 hr, 73 sb, 126 r, 106 rbi, 74 bb, 158 k
  56. *Honolulu (Tokyo) -(Robinzon Fuentes - Type B) - Daniel West (RP)
    • Not much from West, retired after just 6 seasons of pro ball.
    • Stats: None
Other notable picks:
