It's your boy Leon back with the Season 6 Draft recap for Cobbfather - overall, it wasn't a very deep draft in terms of Major League quality talent. Let's see who landed some solid talent, starting with the NL South.
NL SOUTH
Charleston Chew
|
With the 9th overall pick, the Chew selected Peter Hukata, a solid hitting infielder, with very good contact, and high durability. In the field, Shortstop appears to be a stretch for him, but he should be a very good 2B or 3B. Hukata will be a solid addition to the lineup when he reaches the bigs, but we don’t see him as a superstar. The Chew got decent pitchers in the 2nd and 3rd round, we think 3rd rounder Bud Moran could be a solid major leaguer.
Final Synopsis: Charleston had a good draft, but we’re not blown away.
Grade: B
Jackson Rockets
|
Picking 31st, the Rockets landed right handed starting pitches Jarrett Lofton. He has great pitches and velocity, and keeps the ball down, but his mediocre splits and awful control make it highly questionable that he’ll ever see the majors. Not good for a first rounder. We like 2nd rounder Stu Acosta and 3rd rounder Floyd Randall as decent relief prospects, so all’s not lost here.
Final Synopsis: Lofton is a horrible first round pick, but they rebounded with some decent relievers.
Grade: D+
Memphis Mayhem
|
Memphis took reliever Rich Gordon with the 23rd pick. Gordon has excellent ratings across the board, with a mediocre LH split his 2nd biggest downside to the fact that he only projects to a stamina of 5, which makes us think he’s not that great of a first rounder, even in a weak draft class. After that, they didn’t really get much in terms of prospects with major league potential.
Final Synopsis: Gordon is good, but won’t be able to go many innings, and the rest of the draft was a bust
Grade: D
San Juan Chinchillas
|
With the 15th pick San Juan got 3B Gus Lennon, a powerful bat who kills lefties and has solid ratings across the board. He will add a lot of punch to the lineup when he hits the bigs. He doesn’t have great durability, which may limit him to around 120 games a season, but that’s about the only downside we see. After that they got a couple of decent hitters, and a few pitchers that have major league potential. Nice depth here.
Final Synopsis: Lennon can mash, and they got good depth in a draft that wasn’t that deep
Grade: A
